Saturday and Beautiful Clouds

This afternoon I went to resident access 1, off West Gulf Drive. There weren't many people on the beach. It was another hot afternoon, around 90 degrees, but on the beach it was windy and felt a little cooler. There weren't many good shells, so after watching the beautiful clouds for a while, I headed back home to the air-conditioning. I know, I'm a whimp. :) Even though we had lots of clouds around, we got no rain.

Where's The Rain Wednesday?

There was a chance of rain today, but that didn't happen, at least not where I was. This evening some very dark clouds came rolling by and I heard just a little thunder. But, all I saw were a few sprinkles. The temperature got up to 87 today, but it really didn't seem that hot.

At resident access 1, off West Gulf Drive, there weren't very many people. There was one lady shelling, a couple of ladies walking, a couple who were walking their dogs, and two guys fishing. That sounds like I should add something like 'and a pelican in a pine tree' to the end of that. :-) The water is still very clear. There weren't a lot of shells and what was there, were all small. I didn't pick up any.

Just before leaving the beach, I noticed one of the fishermen had something on his line. After a while, he pulled in a nice size fish, around 20 inches long. After measuring it, he released it.

There was a pretty rainbow to look at, on the way from the beach.

Tonight, a little after 10:00 it started raining and it lasted for about an hour. I guess every little bit helps. There is a chance of rain, for the next several days. I hope that means that the rainy season has begun.

These are the shells that were picked up yesterday, during the 'Turtle Walk'. Most of them are very small.

Friday's Shark Advisory

It was cloudy all day with the temperature reaching 79. The wind was coming from the NW which usually brings some pretty good shelling, but the waves were really churning up the sand today. Just after I walked out onto the beach it started lightly raining. There were some shells, and I just had to walk for a while to see if perhaps the big waves would throw a Junonia or a Lion's Paw up on the beach in front of me. But, I am sad to report, the only ones I carried home were some jingles, kitten paws and a couple buttercups.

There were very few people on the beach around resident access 1. A couple people were on their evening walk, and a group of teenage boys walked past me. That was it, until a Sanibel Police officer came driving up to me on a four wheeler. I had seen her coming from the east. She asked if I had anyone out in the water, and I said no. She then handed a bright pink paper to me and said that there had been a shark bite, just a little east of where I was. She then went on her way and I saw her stop again further down the beach to talk to more people. The paper she gave me said that the City of Sanibel had put out a Shark Advisory. The Sanibel Police were called to Dosinia Condos on West Gulf Drive, just after 4 PM today. When they arrived they saw a 15 year old male, who appeared to have been bitten by a shark, while swimming in thigh-deep water. He was then transported to a hospital.

Now, that put a damper on my evening, I kept thinking how awful it was for the boy and his family. I wondered if they were just starting their vacation, or was this a terrible ending to their vacation? Either way, it's terrible. Hopefully the boy will be fine and have a story to tell his friends when he gets home. Later tonight there was an UPDATE!

The rain didn't seem to be letting up and I was already getting pretty wet, so I decided to give up my pursuit of the perfect shell and walked away.

When you enlarge the first two photos, you can see the saltwater mist in the air, further down the beach.

For your cyber-shelling pleasure.

The end of this video is a little strange. You'll hear the sound of a 4 wheeler and then the police officer asking me if I had anyone out there, I said no and because it all caught me off guard, I lowered the camera as I shut it off. So, that's the end. It actually sounds like somebody might have hit me on the head and knocked me out. :-)

Wednesday's Missed Sunset

After dinner with friends this evening, I still tried to catch sunset from the beach. After going to the nearest beach access on West Gulf Drive, which was #1, I ran through almost all of the path. The first clear view I had, was of the top edge of the sun as it slipped below the water. Darn! :-( I couldn't get a photo in time, but there was still a beautiful pink glow. A couple groups of people were still standing on the beach, where they had been watching the sun disappear.

It was starting to get a little cool out, but I checked the beach for shells; and took a quick video. That's it for today. :-)

Wednesday's Chilly Wind

Today was a chilly one, with the temperature getting as low as 45 and the high was 59. The wind was out of the NNW at 7 and gusting up to 24. The best part of the day was sunshine. :-)

I talked to a friend today that had gone out at 6:00 this morning to Blind Pass. She is a die-hard sheller, and with the wind in the NNW, the cold air didn't keep her from going. She said there were some shells there and she looked through them a short time and then went to a beach near her friends house in the Gulf Pines area. There were no shells there. Next she went to check out the beach off West Gulf Drive at a resident access and no shells there.

About mid-afternoon she went back out to Blind Pass again. This time there were no shells because everything was then covered with sand.

This evening I gave in and went to West Gulf Drive and resident access #1 to get a video and a couple pictures to share with you. I hurried out through the path because the wind was very cold. The waves were still pretty big and they were carrying quite a bit of sand in. The only shells I saw were Arks and just a few pen shells. I could only see a couple of people way up the beach in front of Mitchell's, other than that, it was only me, a couple of seagulls, a pelican, and the sun.

As I drove back West Gulf Drive and CasaYbel, I noticed everyone had their plants all neatly covered because the weather forecast shows it may be even colder tonight, somewhere between 35 to 38. BRRRR! Tomorrow the forecast high is 57. I'm feeling bad for those people who came here on vacation this week, but I'm sure they will make the best of it somehow. Saturday it should warm back up in the low 70's. I'm ready for it!
