It was sunny this morning but we had several short downpours late this afternoon and evening. Those only resulted in 0.37" of rain on the east end of the island today. The temperature got up to 89 this afternoon, but it is supposed to go down to 75 during the night, which is as cool as it's been for a while now.
On the 4th of July the Sanibel-Captiva Optimist Club is having their 30th annual road ralley. Each team, which is usually the driver, navigator and passengers who act as spotters. You are required to follow a specific course around the island, while trying to figure out a few pages of questions, from the clues provided. Winners are chosen by their time, mileage and for the most correct answers to the quiz about things seen along the route. Each year some of the entrants decorate their vehicle for this event. The Grandkids want to decorate the SUV we will be driving. So.....we drove over to Ft Myers for some decorating supplies at Party City. I have to tell you, that was a fun adventure, except for the bill! They also picked out a couple of birthday things to put on the suv when we go pickup another Grandson at the airport the morning of the 4th, which is also his 17th birthday. They think it will be funny to embarrass him, I'm not too sure about that. :-) But we're doing it.
We stopped at Mel's Dinner for lunch. I'm not sure the kids were impressed with the 50's decor and music that was playing, but we had fun anyway. I was trying to decide if I wanted a cheeseburger and fries or a footlong chili dog. I said I hadn't had a footlong chili dog for years and they insisted that I order that. When the server put my plate in front of me, they all three, started laughing. They said it was because of the look I had on my face. I don't know when they changed the measurement for a Foot, to 16 inches. They're still laughing about me trying to finish my lunch.
After another stop at Publix for more groceries, we were on the way back to the island. We could see lots of clouds gathering again, and it started raining as soon as we got back.
After the groceries were put away and the rain had stopped, we headed over to the beach for a while. There were pretty big waves, and it was really windy. The only shells I saw were Arks. The kids went in the water for a while, but when we saw dark clouds getting closer again, we left.

The girls thought they needed to stop at CVS to get some red, white and blue nail polish, which we did. It started raining again as soon as we were back on the road. When we got out, it was pouring and we all got soaked. That was the end of the daily adventures. :O)

If I were there I would be all about the road rally...and all about winning (I am too competitive for my own good). You guys have fun and take lots of photos while out and about.
Embarassing the 17 year old is not going to be a good idea. Boys just don't appreciate stuff like that like girls do. My sons would be way mad. Good luck with it.
I wish I was going to be there for the 4th. We were there one year and loved it! That foot long hot dog would have blown me away too! I've only eaten at Mel's once but I really liked it.
BTW, I love the shot of the lone palm tree.
Hi Tootie, first great pics :) It almost feels like we live there since we live through your blogs about Sanibel.
I have a question, have you been out to Blind Pass anytime the past few days or planning to go? I'm so curious what it looks like now. We will be down in 8 days.
Alice, they've changed the date of completion for the Blind Pass Project to nearer the end of July. They still have more dredging to complete.
Snowbird, we wish you could be here too.
Gayle, you're right about the 17 yr olds. :-) I told his little sister that he won't like it.
Thanks Tootie..I was just wondering what it will be like when we arive next weekend, was kinda wishing it would be done..maybe next time :)
