Sanibel Photos

Photos and videos taken during the past three days on a Sanibel beach.

Seashell Hunt, Feb 15. Just in case some of you want to go shelling. You will have to slow it down a little and pause to search.

Sitting on the beach, Feb 16. Some wave footage from resident access 2. It was a beautiful day but it only got up to 61 for the high.

2/16 at resident access 2 off of West Gulf Dr.It was another beautiful sunny day but it was still cool. It only got up to 61 today. When we got to the beach it was just about deserted but in about an hour it was starting to get crowded.

2/16 at resident access 6 off of West Gulf Dr. It was kind of chilly. The high temp. for the day was only 58 degrees. The beach looked as if it was swept clean.

2/17 at resident access 6 off of West Gulf Dr. It was kind of chilly. The high temp. for the day was only 58 degrees. The beach looked as if it was swept clean.

2/18 at resident access 2 off of West gulf Dr. I was only 49 degrees at the time. There were some shells at the high tide line and there were lots of live pen shells and scallops. It looked like the gulls were getting their fill.

Sanibel After Valentine's Day

I am going to be away for a while due to family illness, but Gary is going to take a few pictures and videos for me to post, now and then, along with a little info. I hope it will provide the Sanibel fix that you need. I know I need one; it's cold here! :)

Pictures and video from resident access 5, off of West Gulf Dr. It was a beautiful sunny day. The temp. got up to 64 today but it felt much warmer because there was hardly a breeze.

These pictures and video were taken from the boat ramp picnic area. The bay had a lot of sea grass floating in it and washing up on the shore. It still smelled like dead fish here, from the cold water fish kill that we had.

Windy and Cold Saturday

Today we decided to tackle the traffic to check out the beach. It was heavy, but not as bad as I had expected. I imagine the chilly weather had something to do with that. We went to resident access 6 on West Gulf Drive. It was only 52 degrees but it felt much colder with the northwest wind blowing. The beach actually looked like it had been swept clean. Shells were really scarce.

There were some things at the high tide line. (An operculum.)

And a Valentine heart.

The best thing to do when the NW wind is getting the best of you, is to slip up behind some unsuspecting person and use them for a windbreak.

Rainy Sanibel Afternoon

The high temperature today was 64, after a low last night of 52. Around 2:00 this afternoon, I was driving west on Periwinkle when it began to sprinkle rain. The traffic was already backed up, going off island, back as far as the Island Cow. A short time later, it started pouring down. Up until the time of this posting, we have gotten 0.36", which is less than predicted. It was not a pleasant afternoon to be out, with rain and gusts of wind from the NW up to 33. We also have a high surf advisory.

There were a lot of people at the Sanibel Community Center, trying to set up booths, etc for the Rotary Club Arts & Crafts Fair that is being held this weekend. The weather certainly wasn't helping them out any. Hopefully there will be nicer weather Saturday and Sunday. It is predicted to be mostly sunny and breezy with highs in the low to mid 60s.

I noticed a cute sticker on the back of this SUV. Inside the shape of a dog bone, it says, "My Dog Digs Sanibel". See......everyone likes it here! :)

You can see a lot of cars parked on the left of the photo. Seems as though most of the tourists were using the rainy afternoon for shopping at Periwinkle Place.

Tough afternoon for people preparing for the Arts & Crafts Fair.

The City of Sanibel has issued a Heavy Traffic Advisory for Saturday, February 13th and Sunday, February 14th. In addition to both Valentines Day and Presidents Day falling on the same weekend, two special events will be held on Periwinkle Way this weekend.

Heavy traffic is anticipated along Periwinkle Way from Casa Ybel Road to Tarpon Bay Road due to the following events:

The 27th Annual Rotary Club Arts & Crafts Fair held at the Sanibel Community Association, 2173 Periwinkle Way, on Saturday, February 13th & Sunday, February 14th.

The Farmer's Market being held at Tahitian Gardens, 1975 Periwinkle Way, on Sunday, February 14th.

If you are traveling off the island, it would be wise to add a little extra time.

Another Cold Front For Sanibel

With yet another cold front passing through, our temperature dropped to 57 during the night. This morning we had some sunshine and a 69 degree temperature, but this afternoon it was cloudy and cool with SSE wind with gusts up to 20. The water was pretty rough. We have only had sprinkles and some very light rain this evening.

When trying to go to a West Gulf Beach this afternoon around 3, the traffic was very heavy. After taking Periwinkle Way and then CasaYbel as far as Pointe Santo, we sat in traffic so long waiting to get to the Tarpon Bay intersection, that we gave up and just stopped there. We walked out to the beach, where we hurriedly took a few photos and video. There weren't many people out, due to the chilly wind. I was in a short sleeve T and shorts, and didn't really get cold, but a sweatshirt would have been more comfortable.

There were some small shells in places and a lot of foam left from the waves.

Since the traffic was so heavy, we drove the Gulf Drives from Point Santo over to the east end of the island, instead of Periwinkle Way. At that point, we decided to make a stop at the fishing pier and check that beach for shells. After putting on a sweatshirt and getting halfway to the beach, it started lightly raining. It didn't really matter because there were no shells there anyway. I did see one fellow catch a small fish, which seemed to be the only action going on.

Osprey still on duty!

After waiting at the Periwinkle Way and Causeway Blvd intersection for about 15 minutes, while the traffic patrol kept motioning cars off island, I think you could say that the busy season is in full swing! :( If you have plans to leave the island for an appointment or for the airport, you had better factor in plenty of extra travel time.
