Rough Surf and Sanibel Shells

After a chilly 55 degree night, it continued to drift to a warmer temperature of 73 today. It was windy at times with southern gusts of wind up to 24 mph. This evening the wind changed to the NW, perhaps that will bring some good shelling. We have a high surf advisory until tomorrow evening, due to yet another cold front passing through.

Early this afternoon we went out to Turner Beach on the Captiva side of Blind Pass. Since there was supposed to be rough water, we thought there might be shells piling up there, but there really weren't a lot.

After we found nothing at Blind Pass today we headed to access 1 off of West Gulf Dr. There were a lot of shells washing in and we did pick up a few. The beach was deserted when we got there but by the time we were ready to leave there were some people walking dogs and some were shelling. The temperature had dropped to about 67 when we were there, so without jackets, we didn't stay long.

There was a piece of sea glass here.

See what's in the Buttercup?

I'm now quite addicted to "virtual shelling" with Sanibel Toots!

Thank You for making the effort to take and upload all the great photos-- for someone who can only get to Sanibel every few years, it is a great treat to get to see what's been washing up (and I don't even have to "stoop")!!!

You found some great shells! I love the angel wing and the yellow scallop. The ones with barnacles on them are always interesting to me too.
Thanks for sharing your photos and videos! 67 sounds WARM to me today!

Gorgeous shells! I'm envious here in North Central Florida where I hardly ever make it to the seashore!

BTW, I added you to my blogroll.

Nice angel wing! In the pic above the what's-in-the-buttercup pic, I see the top of a nice orangey mac & cheese sticking up! :)

By the way, what IS in that buildmeupbuttercup?

Glad to see you are back in warmer Florida. Hope all is well with you. Thanks for the shell pictures. It always takes me there when I look at your pictures.

I see it -- what is it? I am itching for a beach walk!

I thought it was a sea cucumber, but check with an expert to be sure. She also thinks it is a sea cucumber that just hasn't developed the rows of spikey things yet. There are over 1200species, so it's difficult finding a photo of the exact coloring etc. :)

I thought you might want to take a look at http://therightblue.com . It was Bobbie Sullivan that I asked for the sea cucumber info. Bobbie and Jerry have a huge amount of interesting 'under the sea' information and beautiful photos taken during their, over 2000 dives. Just looking at their photos is amazing, but you can get lost there for days, reading great stories. :)

I love that blog -- though I don't check it as regularly as I do yours! Probably because Sanibel has its hooks in me!
